Jurby South Road Races

May 17th

What a turn out 13 sidecars including Dave Molyneux, Nick Crowe and World Champion Tim Reeves.

We changed a few bits since the last meeting which was a Darley Moor where we had the overheating problems.  Starting with new air scoop into the Rad, New header tank with a high pressure cap and a lower Celsius thermostat in the engine.  First practice was for newcomers but my stand in passenger Dave "THE ZONE" Bolton hadn't rode all year we went out and did two laps so he could find his way around and get used to the handles.  Next was open practice.  We were still building up speed when we were overtaken by Reeves and Bolty nearly got the eject seat over the front off the bike.  2 Laps later the clutch started slipping so we pulled in before we did any damage.  We spent ages sorting out the clutch and checking over the entire bike ready to rock and roll.   Bolty was OK and just laughed off his little mishap and he was all ready to go.

We had to start 10 seconds behind with Dave Quirk as he is a Clubman license holder same as Bolty but this time would be deducted at the end of the race.  As Shaun dropped the flag we couldn't see anyone they had done one.  I took Quirky straight away and chased on.  At Balllavarran corner Geoff Smale overshot and we dove up the inside 1 lap later we caught Alan Langton and then Neil Kelly and Jason overshot so we weren't doing too bad.  We had Ruth Laidlow caught but then the bloody clutch went again but this time not dragging but I couldn't move it at all.  So the last 2 laps we just stayed behind Ruth where on corrected time we actually finished ahead off.  Overall we came 7th.  Not bad, not good but we got a few bits tested for TT in 7 days time.........
